A bulkhead light is a sealed, surface-mounted luminaire that bolts flat against a wall or ceiling, with a shallow housing and an impact-resistant lens built to survive water, dust and knocks. No stem, no pendant, no recessed cavity. It sits proud of the surface and takes abuse.
That’s the whole idea behind bulkhead lighting. Tough, low-profile, and cheap to maintain.
Here’s the part nobody tells Canadian buyers. Search “bulkhead lighting” from Toronto and almost every result is British or Irish. The word is standard trade vocabulary in the UK, Ireland and Australia, and it barely exists on Canadian spec sheets. So contractors here go looking, find nothing, and assume we don’t stock them.
We do. They’re filed under different names.
What Is a Bulkhead Light? The Short Definition
A bulkhead light is a compact, sealed fixture mounted directly onto a wall or soffit, rated for wet or damp locations, with a gasketed lens and often a protective guard. Typical output runs 1,000 to 4,000 lumens, in a footprint 8 to 14 inches across and under 4 inches deep.
Three traits define bulkhead lighting, and a fixture needs all three:
- Sealed body. A gasket between housing and lens keeps water and dust out. That’s what separates a bulkhead from a decorative sconce.
- Shallow, surface-mount profile. It fastens to a junction box or bracket on the finished surface. Nothing goes into the ceiling void.
- Impact tolerance. Die-cast aluminum, polycarbonate, or metal guard over glass. Built for corridors where carts and shoulders hit the walls.
Miss one and you’ve got something else. A pretty lantern with an open bottom isn’t bulkhead lighting, whatever the product page calls it.
Why It’s Called a Bulkhead
The name comes off a ship. A bulkhead is a vertical dividing wall inside a hull, and lights bolted to those walls had to survive salt spray, vibration and crew traffic in a tight passage. Small, sealed, guarded, flush to the wall.
Those fixtures moved ashore, first to docks and factories, then to stairwells and garages. The marine origin also explains the sealing obsession, and it’s why bulkhead lighting gets graded on ingress protection before anything else.
What Canadians Call Bulkhead Lighting Instead
Here’s the vocabulary problem, and it costs buyers real time. Same fixture, different label depending on which side of the Atlantic wrote the catalogue.

The Anatomy of a Bulkhead Light Fixture
Pull one apart and you find four parts. Each is a place where cheap fixtures fail.
Housing
Die-cast aluminum or moulded polycarbonate. Aluminum wins on heat, and heat kills LEDs. The housing doubles as the heat sink, so a thin stamped-steel body running a 30W board cooks its own driver. Polycarbonate handles coastal salt and pool-room chlorine better, since aluminum corrodes. Die-cast aluminum with a powder coat suits most Canadian commercial work. Salt air or a chemical room, go polycarbonate.
Lens and Diffuser
Three options, not interchangeable:
- Polycarbonate. Impact-resistant, slightly hazy, standard on vandal-prone installs.
- Frosted or ribbed glass. Better clarity, holds colour for decades, but it breaks.
- Acrylic. Cheapest, yellows under UV. Skip it outdoors.
A frosted lens spreads light and hides the diodes. Clear lenses throw further but show every LED as a hot dot, and they glare. In a stairwell you want frosted. Always.
Guard or Cage
The optional part that defines the classic bulkhead look. A die-cast guard takes the hit so the lens doesn’t. Specify one wherever the bulkhead light sits within reach of a forklift mast. Cages cut output 5 to 10%, so budget for it.
Gear Tray, Driver and Hub
Behind the lens sits the LED board and driver. Two details decide whether a bulkhead light is worth buying:
- Voltage range. A 120-347V driver works in any Canadian commercial building. A 120V-only driver limits you to residential and light commercial. Canada’s 347V distribution is common in warehouses and institutions, and it’s the spec American catalogues forget.
- Conduit hub. A threaded 1/2 inch hub lets you feed the fixture with surface conduit instead of cutting finished block. On older retrofits that saves hours.

Read that table twice. The mini wall pack and the 14 inch round wall light overlap on lumens, but only one runs on 347V and only one has a photocell.

How to Read the Ratings That Actually Matter
Most bulkhead lighting spec sheets bury the numbers that decide whether a bulkhead light survives. Here’s how to read them.
IP Ratings: IP65 vs IP66
The IP code comes from IEC 60529. Two digits. First is solids, second is water.
- IP65. Dust-tight, protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. Fine for rain, snow, splash.
- IP66. Dust-tight, protected against powerful water jets, tested at higher volume and pressure.
- IP67 and up. Immersion. Overkill for a wall fixture unless it floods.
For a bulkhead light on an exterior wall in Ontario, IP65 handles everything the weather does. Move to IP66 the moment someone points a pressure washer at it, so think washed parking garages, food plants, transit tunnels, car washes.
One caution. IP65 is a lab test on a new gasket, and gaskets age. A ten-year-old fixture that’s seen 10 freeze-thaw cycles a winter is not still IP65. Gasket material matters more than the number.
Wet Location vs Damp Location
This is the Canadian rating, and the one your inspector cares about. IP is international. Wet and damp location listings come through CSA and ETL certification under the CSA C22.2 No. 250.0 luminaire standard, which sets the marking requirements for damp and wet location fixtures.
- Damp location. Protected from direct water but exposed to moisture. Covered porches, deep soffits, unheated garages.
- Wet location. Direct exposure to rain, snow or splash. Open exterior walls, unprotected entries, wash-down areas.
A damp-rated fixture on an open wall is a code problem and a void warranty. Every bulkhead-style wall fixture we carry is wet location listed, because in Canada the overhang you designed around gets removed in the next renovation. Vandal Resistance and IK Ratings
Impact resistance has its own scale, IK01 to IK10, under EN 62262. IK08 and up is the usual threshold for vandal-resistant service. Plenty of Canadian catalogues skip the IK number and just say “vandal resistant,” which means nothing on its own.
No IK rating on the sheet? Ask what the lens material and thickness are, and whether the guard is die-cast or wire. Die-cast guards beat wire cages, since wire bends and stays bent. And a polycarbonate lens with no guard still outlasts glass with a guard in most abuse cases.
Sizing Bulkhead Lighting: Lumens, Spacing and Colour
Sizing is where projects go wrong, usually by buying too much light and blinding people in a corridor.
Lumen Targets by Space
Start from illuminance targets, not wattage. IES recommended levels for common bulkhead applications:

Multiply foot-candles by floor area and you get lumens needed on the floor. A 400 sq ft parking area at 10 fc wants about 4,000 lumens delivered, so two 2,400 lumen fixtures with a loss allowance. Not four.

Colour Temperature
Selectable CCT made this easy. Most current bulkhead lighting ships 3-CCT or 5-CCT switchable on the fixture, so you pick at install instead of at order. Use 3000K warm for residential entries and hospitality, 4000K neutral as the safe default for corridors and garages, and 5000K cool for security and industrial. Spacing
Simple rule for wall-mounted bulkhead lighting in a corridor: space at roughly 2 to 2.5 times the mounting height. Mount at 8 feet, space at 16 to 20 feet.

Where Bulkhead Lights Earn Their Keep
Bulkhead lighting wins on maintenance cost, not looks. Anywhere a lift rental costs more than the bulkhead light, it pays for itself.
Strong applications:
- Stairwells and egress corridors. Sealed, low glare, easy to pair with battery backup.
- Parking garages. Wall mounting keeps fixtures out of the drive lane and away from truck mirrors.
- Building perimeters and entries. Wall packs and cylinders at door height, usually on a photocell.
- Mechanical and electrical rooms. Dust and vibration. A sealed bulkhead light stays clean.
- Loading docks and tunnels. Impact zone. Guard plus IP66.
- Multi-residential common areas. Laundry, bike storage, garbage rooms. Cheap to own.
- Marine and dockside. Where the fixture started. Polycarbonate, not aluminum.
Weak applications, plainly. A 3,000 lumen wall fixture can’t light a 28 foot warehouse bay, so use high bays. Controls: Photocells, Sensors and Emergency Backup
A bulkhead light with no controls runs all night at full output. Easiest money you’ll ever leave on the table.
Photocells. Dusk-to-dawn switching built into the bulkhead light. On an exterior wall pack this is close to mandatory, and an integral photocell means no separate contactor or timeclock to fail. Our mini wall pack carries one on board.
Occupancy sensors. Best value in stairwells, garages and storage. Drop to 20% output when empty, full output on detection. Savings run 40 to 60% over a photocell alone in low-traffic spaces.
Emergency backup. Here Canadian code gets specific. Under the Ontario Building Code, emergency lighting must deliver an average of at least 10 lux at floor or tread level with a 1 lux minimum, per Article 3.2.7.3. Duration comes from Article 3.2.7.4: two hours in a high building, one hour for a Group B major occupancy, 30 minutes for other occupancies.
Read that as a spec, not trivia. A bulkhead light on an egress stair either has integral battery backup or needs a remote head fed from a central unit. LED vs Legacy Lamped Bulkheads
Older bulkhead lighting used a screw-base lamp, usually an A19 incandescent or a compact fluorescent. Some still do, and that’s not always wrong. You change the lamp, not the fixture, so on a heritage building or where a 20-year-old die-cast housing is still perfect, relamping beats replacing. The case against is efficacy and labour. An integrated LED bulkhead runs 50,000 hours with no relamping in that window. A lamped fixture in a stairwell means a ladder every couple of years.
Canadian regulation has closed the gap on lamp choice too. Under NRCan’s energy efficiency rules for general service lamps, products in the revised scope must hit a minimum efficacy of 45 lumens per watt, staged from 2024-01-01 for incandescent and 2025-01-01 for other lamp types. The cheap 15 lm/W screw-in is leaving the market anyway.
So: integrated LED for new work, lamped where the housing is sound.
Rebates: Getting the DLC Listing Right
Utility incentives cover a real slice of a retrofit, and eligibility usually turns on one thing. The bulkhead light has to be on the DesignLights Consortium Qualified Products List. Two facts from the DLC directly:
- Close to 700 utility and efficiency programs use the DLC Qualified Products Lists as their eligibility gate.
- QPL listing does not guarantee a rebate. Incentives stay at each program sponsor’s discretion.
That second point catches people. A DLC-listed fixture is eligible to be considered, not approved. Confirm with the utility before you order.
Not every bulkhead-style fixture is listed, either. Decorative wall lights often aren’t, while wall packs and vapour tights usually are. A Spec Checklist Before You Order
Run this before the PO goes out. Ten items, in the order that catches the most errors.
- Wet or damp location listing matched to the actual install condition.
- IP rating. IP65 for weather, IP66 for wash-down.
- Voltage range. 120-347V if the building is commercial or institutional.
- Lumen output derived from foot-candle targets, not guessed from wattage.
- CCT. Selectable if you’re stocking, fixed if the spec is locked.
- Guard where impact is likely, and confirm it’s die-cast.
- Certification mark. cUL, cETL or CSA. A UL-only mark is a US listing.
- DLC status if a rebate is in the budget.
- Conduit hub if you’re feeding with surface conduit.
- Emergency backup if the bulkhead light sits on an egress path.
One more that isn’t on the sheet. Ask for the IES photometric file. We’ve seen spec sheets in this category carrying the same beam angle on fixtures of different sizes and wattages, which tells you it was typed, not measured. No file, treat the published beam angle as marketing.
Mistakes Buyers Make With Bulkhead Lighting
Four that come up on nearly every quote.
Buying on wattage. Wattage is input, lumens are output. A 30W fixture at 80 lm/W beats a 40W fixture at 55 lm/W on both light and running cost.
Ignoring corridor glare. A clear-lens fixture at eye height in a hallway is unpleasant and, in a care facility, a hazard. Frosted lens, every time.
Treating a decorative sconce as bulkhead lighting. If it isn’t sealed and wet-rated, it isn’t. The outdoor wall light range spans both, so read the ratings, not the photo.
Forgetting the mounting surface. A round fixture on an octagon box is fine. A 14 inch bulkhead on split-face block needs an adapter plate, and nobody orders one until the crew is on site.
