How big should outdoor wall lights be?
Match the fixture to the opening it lights, not to the wall. At 13.74in tall and 5in wide, the RIO Small suits a single entry door, a side door, or a narrow pier between two windows. It projects 6.66in off the wall, so it clears a storm door without catching a shoulder. For a pair flanking a double garage or a wide front porch, step up to the 17.74in Medium in the same collection. For a driveway pillar, the Rio post top covers the same look.
What are the benefits of black wall lights?
Matte black is the finish that disappears. It reads as neutral against brick, stucco, dark siding and black window frames. It also hides the water spotting and dust film that show up on polished and brushed finishes after one winter. On this fixture the black steel frame is the shade and the tempered glass carries the light, so a clear filament lamp stays the feature.
Is the RIO Small rated for wet locations?
Yes. The Rio collection spec sheet lists it CETLus-Listed with a wet location rating, which covers direct rain and snow, not just a covered soffit. Votatec doesn't publish an IP number for the fixture and it doesn't need one. In Canada the cETL location rating is what an inspector reads, and wet is the top of the three, above damp and dry.
What the installer needs on site
Three things aren't in the box: the junction box, the sealing tape and the lamp. The manual's order is mounting unit first, then the wire connection, then the fixture on with the supplied rubber rings and screws. Its one warning earns its place in a Canadian winter. Caulk the back plate and the wall surface, or water gets in behind the fixture. The green ground screw comes preinstalled.
